The UAE Education System 2026–2027 | Cycles, Tracks, Calendar and Assessments — A Parent's Guide
This page is a single reference guide to the school education system in the UAE for the 2026–2027 year: the school cycles, the tracks (General, Advanced, Elite and Vocational), the academic calendar, the assessment map, what counts towards the student's result and what does not, and then how all of this connects to university admission after EmSAT ceased to be mandatory. We have updated it to be the parent's starting point instead of scattered searching.

The structure of school education in the country
General education in government schools is divided into three cycles after kindergarten, and each cycle has a different character in its subjects and its style of assessment:
| Stage | Grades | General character |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | KG1 – KG2 | Language and sensory foundations, with no achievement tests |
| Cycle 1 | 1 – 4 | Foundations of reading, writing and arithmetic |
| Cycle 2 | 5 – 8 | The start of subject specialisation and the appearance of project-based assessments |
| Cycle 3 | 9 – 12 | Specialised tracks, and a direct link to university admission |
💡 The real turning point for the student is Grade 9, not Grade 12: it is where the track is chosen, and the weakness that accumulates in it is what appears as a crisis in Grade 11. In detail: The five stages of education and its types in the UAE · Details of Cycle 3.
The tracks in Cycle 3 — the decision that determines the university
From Grade 9 or Grade 10, students are distributed across tracks that differ in the depth of mathematics and science, and in the university majors they open up later. The choice here carries more weight than any grade in Grade 12:
| Track | For whom | What it opens and what it closes | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| General | The majority; a balanced focus | Suits business administration, humanities, law and many majors; some engineering and medical colleges require the Advanced track or specific subjects | General track majors · Its advantages |
| Advanced | Those aiming for engineering, medicine and science | Deeper mathematics and science; a prerequisite for many colleges | Its majors and admission advantages · Its advantages |
| Elite | Selective admission from early stages | An advanced science programme; it has its own test (sequential EmSAT), which is not covered by the 2024 cancellation | The Elite track: requirements and registration · Elite versus Advanced |
| Vocational / Applied | Those who prefer a practical track | Opens up technical diplomas and vocational institutes | Vocational institutes in Abu Dhabi |
The practical difference between General and Advanced is explained with examples in this guide. The conditions for moving between tracks, and the percentages required, change from year to year — check them with the school, not with any website.
Academic calendar 2026–2027
The start of the year, the term breaks and the exam weeks are issued officially and may differ slightly between government and private schools and between curricula. We update the academic calendar page with every circular; plan external support around the exam weeks, not after them. (English version)
Guides to the pivotal grades
| Grade | The shift that happens in it |
|---|---|
| Grade 6 | The move to Cycle 2: multiple teachers and extended tasks |
| Grade 7 | The integrated project and individual assessment within group work |
| Grade 9 | The start of Cycle 3 and the choice of track: the sciences separate and mathematics takes a leap |
| Grade 12 | The overall average, subject grades and university placement tests |
The core subjects in the UAE curriculum
The subjects on which the student is measured academically in most grades are four: Arabic, English, Mathematics and Science (which branches in Cycle 3 into physics, chemistry and biology). Islamic Education, Social Studies and other subjects are added to them depending on the track and the grade. These four subjects are themselves the focus of the central and project-based assessments, which is why external support is usually concentrated in them.
The assessment map across the school year
| Assessment | Grades | Does it count towards the student's result? |
|---|---|---|
| The SPA diagnostic test | Cycles 2 and 3 | No — diagnostic, to measure the level |
| Project-based learning projects (PBLA) | Cycle 2 | Yes — part of the academic assessment |
| End-of-term exams | All grades | Yes |
| University placement tests | After Grade 12 | They do not count towards the school average, but they decide between direct entry to the major and a foundation year |
🔎 The exact weight of each assessment within the average is issued by the school administration and differs from one school to another — ask for it in writing at the start of the term.
The difference every parent must understand
- Diagnostic assessment — measures where the student actually stands and is not recorded in their result. It is not something to study for in the sense of memorising, but its result is the most valuable free indicator of your child's real gaps.
- Academic assessment — counts towards the result: term exams, projects, class participation.
The SPA diagnostic test
Students in Cycles 2 and 3 in government schools sit a diagnostic test in Arabic, English and mathematics at the beginning of the year. The full series:

Project-based learning (PBLA)
In Cycle 2, part of the student's assessment is carried out through practical projects in the four subjects. The work is done in groups but the assessment is individual, and the integrated project brings the four subjects together in one piece of work. The parent's guide to Grade 7 · Grade 7 page.
From Grade 12 to university — what has changed
Since November 2024, EmSAT has no longer been mandatory for Grade 12 students, and there is no unified replacement test. Admission today rests on three layers: the overall average and the grades in the subjects linked to the major and the track, then a placement test specific to each university (or SAT/ACT where it is accepted as an alternative), then an English language test. A student who chooses the right track in Grade 9 and builds their subjects in Grade 10 and Grade 11 reaches Grade 12 without surprises. Government or private? And the other curricula in the country
The differences between government and private education in the UAE are not a matter of quality in absolute terms, but of curriculum, language of instruction and university admission pathway: A comparison between the private and government education pathways. A student in private schools may be on one of four curricula, each with a different logic:
| Curriculum | Critical years | Main pressure point |
|---|---|---|
| UAE curriculum | 9 – 12 | The choice of track, then the overall average, subject grades and the university placement test |
| British / IGCSE | Year 10 – 13 | Subject choice, then IGCSE and A-Level |
| American | Grade 9 – 12 | The cumulative GPA and SAT |
| International Baccalaureate IB | DP1 – DP2 | The internal assessment and the EE essay |
💡 When choosing a private tutor, the right question is not "Do you teach mathematics?" but "Have you taught Edexcel mathematics for Year 11?".
When does your child need external support?
- A gradual decline in one subject over a whole term — not a one-off drop.
- They understand in class but cannot get started at home on their own.
- They can solve the worked examples but cannot solve a similar problem with different numbers.
- An old foundational gap that shows up whenever a new topic is built on it.
- Grade 9 and the choice of track are close, and the level in mathematics and science does not settle the choice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Cycle 2 and Cycle 3?
Cycle 2 covers Grades 5 to 8; subject specialisation begins in it and project-based assessments appear in it. Cycle 3 covers Grades 9 to 12; in it the tracks are chosen and the subjects are linked directly to university admission.
What is the difference between the General and Advanced tracks?
The Advanced track goes deeper in mathematics and science and is a prerequisite for many engineering, medical and science colleges; the General track is balanced and suits a wider range of majors. The choice is made at the start of Cycle 3, and the conditions for moving between tracks change every year.
Does the SPA test affect my child's average?
No. It is a diagnostic assessment and is not recorded in the academic result, unlike PBLA projects and end-of-term exams.
Is EmSAT still required for university admission?
It has no longer been mandatory for Grade 12 students since November 2024; universities decide for themselves through subject grades, their own placement tests and the language test. The sequential EmSAT specific to the Elite track is not covered by the cancellation.
When does preparation for university admission begin?
From the choice of track in Grade 9, then building the subjects in Grade 10 and Grade 11, and finishing the language test before the middle of Grade 12.
My child is in a private school with a British curriculum — does this page apply to them?
Partly. The structure of cycles, tracks and assessments applies to the national curriculum, but the curricula table, the criteria for choosing a tutor and the university admission guides apply to all pathways within the UAE.
